Biography
Tom is a retired pediatric cardiologist, lifelong runner, and writer who believes that stories—like roads—are meant to be explored and shared. He lives in New Orleans with his wife, Dana, where the Big Easy's slower rhythm gives him space to reflect and write.
For more than four decades, Tom cared for children with heart disease. He served over 30 years as an attending physician at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, followed by six years at the Manning Family Children's Hospital in New Orleans and is now Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
Tom earned his BS in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and his MD from New York University School of Medicine, and he published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers spanning echocardiography, congenital heart disease, and the cardiovascular impact of pediatric overweight.
After retiring in 2025, Tom finally turned to the kind of writing he had long imagined doing—writing that lets him wander beyond the boundaries of science. Much of his work is shaped by a desire to honor his parents and preserve stories for the generations that follow.
Tom's father, a prolific writer of more than 1,250 limericks, remains a guiding influence. Tom often jokes that his dad was an AI-style wordsmith before such things existed, and that his own impulse to write began by watching that creative spark up close.
His mother left him a different inheritance: a deep love of genealogy. She spent years tracing their family back more than five centuries, building a record of lives and connections that might otherwise have disappeared. Tom now carries that work forward, seeing it as another way to understand where he comes from and to leave something meaningful behind.
Running is where he thinks best and writing takes shape—where stress eases and ideas rise to the surface. His first two books, launching under his imprint Winding Road Press, reflect that blend of endurance, memory, humor, and heart.
When he's not writing, Tom can be found playing pickleball, running, skiing with his son and grandchildren, digging into genealogy archives, or around a table with a good board game.
He is currently at work on new projects that weave together medicine, memory, and the legacies we leave behind.
